Sustainable fashion means using natural and eco-friendly products in fashion and using them in ways that are environmentally friendly. It is not like sustainable brands do not make profits but they do not prefer harming the environment or animals. Those who don’t know, this fashion can reduce carbon dioxide and other gas emissions. As we know, the fashion industry comes second when we talk about the contribution to global pollution, this sustainable fashion is much needed.
“SUSTAINABILITY IS THE KEY TO A BETTER FUTURE”
Yes, it is true! Ignoring sustainability can lead to the exhaustion of natural resources. It is great that people from all over the world have started looking forward to using more sustainable products. This will take some time but later or sooner, we will understand the importance of it and accept it naturally. The fabrics are made from natural or recycled materials, aiming to reduce harm through the production process and overall environmental impact. Not only this, if we talk about business, we should consider almost all the aspects.
For example, considering shipping methods, instead of packing a product in plastic, we can use recycled or paper packaging or biodegradable products. The sooner we understand the importance of sustainability in fashion and how it less affects the earth, the better and easier it will be to come up with good and more sustainable brands. As a customer or buyer, we also want to use such types of clothes more and create a positive impact on our environment.
Let me tell you some more advantages of sustainable fashion:
- Sustainable clothing can stay in your wardrobe for a longer period and minimizes waste.
- The better ways of using clothes sustainably are remaking, reusing, upcycling, recycling and by donating them.
- The purpose of this is basically to reduce the damage to the environment.
- It aims at minimal usage of natural resources like water.
Most of the sustainable products are made with organic colors, hand printing, using non-plastic, non-polyester, etc.
The fashion industry is on the way to establish new ways to make the industry more sustainable. Some trends that had been seen are –
- Rentals are increasing
- Recycling and Upcycling are becoming popular concepts
- Eco-friendly clothes are being loved
- Re-wearing or Reusing is getting traction
- Donations is being considered the norm
Sustainable fashion is promoting a way of living which can help us to reduce pollution from the world. It is good as well as helpful for coming generations and for our body and health.
There are many sustainable brands in India. It is good to know that people are actually using it. Recently, I did a collaboration with this home grown or say sustainable brand. Being a stylist, I was quite happy to style their product. The brand name is NIKSMIX.
So, the brand is all about curated selection of preloved/upcycled garments, that targets two things:
- Bringing stylish choices to people in really affordable price range
- Reducing the carbon footprint by reintroducing pre-used good quality clothing in the economic cycle and aiming to satisfy demands sustainably and having fun without pollution.
NIKSMIX loves to reinvent and use recycled and second-hand pieces and create more sustainable processes to reduce environmental impact. The founder of the brand mostly uses cottons, silks and viscose and avoids all the plastic, polyester stuff.
The theme of my collaboration with the brand was ‘UPCYCLE’ because what I saw in the brand is that if any clothes have defects, the designer adds another fabric to make it look more interesting. The brand majorly believes in recycling, reinventing,and reusing.
Thus, this brand has begun a unique initiative to help the environment while keeping people looking smart and admirable. It is because of people and brands like NIKSMIX, we still keep hope for this Planet Earth, for which there is no alternative.
So, simply, we should opt for Sustainable Fashion. Why? This quote by Lucy Siegle says it all,
“Fast Fashion isn’t free. Someone, somewhere, is paying.”
